Jordan says that “somebody told they thought killed a man once”, Lucille then said that she thought “he was a German spy during the war” (Fitzgerald 48). In the third chapter of the book, some people, such as Nick and Jordan, begin to gossip and say rumors that they had heard about Gatsby, who he is and what he has done. In which the passenger is the drunk Owl Eyes and the driver is Owl Eyes’ friend who is also drunk and making the bad decision of drinking. There is even an accident involving a car crash and a drunk driver after Gatsby’s party. In both parties there was a lot of alcohol and in both parties people drank a lot. This quote may or may to be taken literally, but however it is taken it can be seen that Owl Eyes has been drinking a lot and that he desperately needed to sober up, that is why he headed to the library instead of enjoying himself. Owl Eyes also says “I’ve been drunk for about a week now, and I thought it might sober me up to sit in a library.” (Fitzgerald 50). This is the second time that a party done by someone of a lot of money has alcohol and people are getting drunk. The second part of the quote is the fact that he is drunk at Gatsby’s party. Owl Eyes is described as “A stout, middle-aged man with enormous owl-eyed spectacles” and he “was sitting somewhat drunk on the edge of a great table, staring with unsteady concentration at the shelves of books.” (Fitzgerald 49) The first part of the quote is a description of the man, Own Eyes. This is seen when Nick finds the man he calls “Owl Eyes”. People can also be drinking alcohol in chapter three, at Gatsby’s big party. This alcohol is most likely bootleg alcohol, making it part of organized crime. This quote is showing that they had alcohol and the people at these parties and get togethers would drink alcohol. Wilson and I called each other by our first names” (Fitzgerald 34). In the second chapter it is written “after the first drinks Mrs. Both of these parties have a lot of alcohol, this can be seen in the story itself and in the actions of the characters. It can be seen in the first couple of chapters how the characters, such as Tom and Gatsby, have alcohol at their parties. Bootlegging was related to organized crime. Many people got to bootlegging which is the business of transporting and trading alcoholic beverages, this was illegal at the time. This is when the USA banned alcohol selling and consumption. The story takes place during the 1920’s which is during the prohibition era of US history. There are not many examples of organized crime in the first couple of chapters of The Great Gatsby, written by F. ![]()
